Notice sent from Brian Ferris click here to download 2010 Debriefing Meeting Aerial Baiting for Wild Dogs

22 July 2010

The latest figures are available here - 2010 Wild Dog Attacks, Sightings and Baiting.xls

Attached are the statistics for 2010. The predation figures do not include National Parks because they get the data from the LHPA and it would be duplication. There were 53 applications for aerial baiting this current year and two applied twice.

The summary is that 7388 domestic livestock were reported killed or injured, 1445 wild dogs sighted, 1185 wild dogs controlled (there might be some duplication here) and 30,147 kgs of bait deployed (apart from the bit that wasn't due to mitigating circumstances and other acts of gud).

Phil

Aerial Baiting progress or lack thereof

No doubt some of you have hear the good news from Brian. Aerial baiting was to have started on Tuesday with action around Maitland. The airspace around the drop zones have been closed by the RAAF until early next week (it is, after all, the end of the financial year). A couple of runs only have been completed. With the inclement showery, misty, weather we are now a couple of days behind. It was hoped to move further west and find some clear air to bait the rest of the Hunter over the next days.

We have been extremely fortunate over the last 5 years to generally have good weather so our luck had to run out at some point. It is pretty frustrating but there is nothing we can do but wait for a break in the weather and keep in contact with LHPA's further down the line before poisoning large quantities of fresh meat.

Some of the associations have used Doggone and DK9 for the drop (or were planning to). The Doggone at Mudgee enabled 2 days work to be done in one and it had significant OH&S advantages. It was relatively clean (only body fluids were that of the dropper), helicopter needed minimal cleaning at the end of the day and less environmental risk in case of emergency.

It has been necessary to move a couple of bait lines away from Barry Station in the southern NELHPA because they are mustering. If there are any more changes please give me plenty of notice.

regards
Phil
