Wollomombi LAC/Council Partnership provides Chandler Oval new fence

Each year Armidale Dumaresq Council provides its Local Area Committees with funds to enhance their area.

The Wollomombi Local Area Committee (LAC) chose to put their funding to replace the old picket fence at the Chandler oval (the Wollomombi Sports Reserve).  The funding available could only purchase fencing material and hire of plant, but this did not deter the LAC from their goal.

The LAC approached the Chandler Public School P & C and together they organised volunteers to put up the metal fence during the July school holidays. The result is students from the Chandler Public School returned to school to maintenance-free galvanised wire panel fence and there is already talk of starting a Wollomombi Cricket Team.

A truly village effort, Bruce Browning and Grant Blackwell from the LAC were assisted by local, Grant Jordan and Chandler P & C President, Stuart Williamson. They were joined by young community members, Joel Blackwell and Lachlan and James Williamson who helped to dig post holes, concrete the new posts and assemble the panels. These young members enjoyed working outdoors as a team and above all  they were please that they were doing their bit for the village.

Principal of the Chandler Public School, Fran Brown was delighted with the new fence as the picket fence had been a maintenance and safety issue for some time.

Schools around the district can now enjoy sports in the Chandler oval and locals are bringing back cricket matches that used to occur before the demise of the picket fence.

Meeting: Wollomombi Local Area Committee and Sauer Memorial Hall Committee held their Annual General Meeting at the Hall followed by a Public Meeting on Wednesday 17 February 2010 at 7.30pm. Here are the minutes of these meetings and the meeting notice

Village Plan: On Wednesday 13 January 2010 a successful public meeting was held at Sauer Memorial Hall. Options for a village plan were discussed. Speical guest at the meeting was the Civic and Recreation Manager at Armidale Dumaresq Council, Phil Brown.

Here are some of Phil's thoughts - for us to consider -

Village Plan?

Above everything, the whole community must have ownership. It cannot be just the landholders or the village residents, it must be both. My theory is that, villages were formed in the past when there was some sort of industry or activity located nearby that needed support in terms of food and other supplies. In turn, that village grew to a point of sustainability where the industry supplied work opportunities for those who lived in the village and the industry got the support - forming a community.

Can someone do some research on what is a village? Maybe I'm wrong.

How's this for a logo -

"Our Village - Our Community"

As a village community there is a need to ask the following questions.

What do we want for our village (as in what do we want it to become)?

Do we want more jobs, the Community to be more supportive of each other, make it an attractive place to bring up children, a healthy lifestyle, a share of the tourism dollar. What sort of infrastructure do we need to support this?, do we already have it or some of it?

A lot of these things can be identified in a SWOT analysis and we'll probably go down that track soon.

What are our strong points (climate, fresh air, safety for children, land availability, proximity to waterfalls and national parks, etc).

What are our weak points (cold winters, no accommodation for visitors, low employment opportunities, distance from town, communications).

What are our opportunities, what do we already have that we can use to make things better (build the village focus around the hall, bring back the bull riding, create village events, build accommodation for backpackers, home-stays, farm-stays, other tourism opportunities).

What are our threats (Hillgrove as competition, rural industry downturn, sustainability, unreliable water supply, proximity to coast, community division).

When you think of the things that you want for your village (your vision), don't just think in terms of a wish list, think in terms of how we make our village a better place to live and to be in. What is going to do that?

When this is established, we can look at the things that may help achieve that vision and also look at the constraints to see if they can be overcome.

Phil Brown

The minutes of the meeting are now available.

The Wollomombi Waste Transfer Station is open on Saturdays from 8am to 12 Noon. Walter will happily take all your glass, cans, recyclable plastics, paper and cardboard - just take those extra few minutes and sort these out from your general rubbish and help our environment (and your wallet)!
